Train service between Denver and Fort Collins is moving forward either way. Issue 7A is what brings it south, with service to the Springs within five years. If we reject it, northern Colorado gets its train while we wait our turn, again.

With advocacy by our newly elected RTD board member, Karen Benker, and the work by Longmont’s immediate past mayor, Joan Peck, work has started on our rail service. I believe it is even better than the original FasTracks plan.

Full buildout of the CoCo system is essential to achieving our region’s transit goals. CoCo is expected to generate roughly 1.27 million passenger trips annually.

In our changing world with our changing needs and our changing climate, we need to start investing in a future that is less defined by cars. Single-occupancy vehicles are likely not going anywhere anytime fast — this is America after all. But a reliable train service is a step toward a real alternative. That’s worth our investment.

This new rail service will help relieve the overflowing traffic on I-25. So, what is your travel preference? Take your chance on I-25 or sit back and relax on the Colorado Connector?

Boulder Mayor Aaron Brockett said that, should CoCo come to Boulder at full scale, it would be “transformational for the region.”

“That means a lot fewer cars on the road, it means that people can travel without the congestion of the highways,” Brockett said. “It would make a huge difference for mobility throughout the region.”

The station is intended to support future bus rapid transit service between Longmont and Boulder, and Front Range Passenger Rail service, along with connections to the city’s pedestrian and bicycle network.

What makes CoCo so compelling is that it’s a practical, realistic plan – it uses existing freight rail tracks, meaning passenger service can be online within eight years. Beyond taking cars off our clogged highways and cutting vehicle pollution, it opens up real economic mobility for everyday people.

The City of Longmont is set to break ground on a new transit center for the city on Friday. The project will support the future Bus Rapid Transit service between Longmont and Boulder with planned infrastructure for the Front Range passenger rail, the city said.

Ballots are dropping in Colorado like autumn leaves and while there are plenty of choices on the ballot, one should be an automatic "Yes!": 7A, the sales tax that will finally allow us to build a passenger rail line along the front range, decades past due.

Supporters say the measure would provide infrastructure to connect the train to pre-existing track in Colorado Springs and Pueblo, leased from BNSF and Union Pacific.

Coloradans have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to fund a shovel-ready project to bring fast and frequent train service to the Front Range.
